Completed Research Projects

  • -/2012 : Sezibera (co-investigator). Project name: Trauma, Psychiatric Disorders, Recoconciliation and Social Reconstruction in Post-Genocide Rwanda. (Ashurst Foundation). Two years of funding awarded . Main goals : Assess the prevelance of mental disorders, with more focus on Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and comorbid disorders (psychiatric and physical), and social cohesion in post-genocide Rwanda. One paper on The Factor Structure of PTSD symptoms was published from the data collected; others to come.

 

  • -/2014 :  Sezibera (Member, Implementing and Technical Team). Project name: Early Childhood Development and Family Services. Baseline Evaluation in 20 Sites in Rwanda. In Partnership with Imbuto Foundation, UNICEF, MIGEPROF. Main goals : The baseline evaluation’s key objectives included assessing the health and well-being of young children and families in the surveyed sites and establishing current conditions related to ECD&F to inform programmes in the selected areas. The summary report provides an overview of several domains that are critical to children’s health and development, including caregiver characteristics; children’s achievement of developmental milestones; children’s social-emotional well-being; opportunities for learning and stimulation; access to health and WASH services; nutrition; and child protection.

 

  • -/2016 -/2017:  Sezibera (Member of the Technical Team, Data Analyst and Reporting). Project name: Early Childhood Development and Family Services. Endline Evaluation. Main goals: With the goal of analysing programme impact and identifying successes and areas that need adjustment, this endline evaluation was conducted from October 2016 to February 2017, in the same 10 districts and with the same households as those that were included in the baseline evaluation.

 

Ongoing Research Projects

  • -/2017 : Sezibera (Co-Investigator, in collaboration with Columbia University, NY.). Project name: Epidemiological Study of Mental Health and Scial Reconstruction in the 21st Century Rwanda (2017).  Main goals : This is a replication of the 2012 study on Trauma, Psychiatric Disorders, Reconciliation and Social Reconstruction in Post-genocide Rwanda ?  Contact Person: Prof. Richard Neugebauer,  Associate Professor, Clinical Epidemiology (Psychiatry), Department of Psychiatry, Columbia University, CU, NY.

 

  • -/2017 : Sezibera (Participant, in collaboration with Western University, Canada). Project name : Health Equity in Context: Local Solutions for Global Problems. Main goals: In partnership with Centre for Research on Health Equity and Social Inclusion (CRHESI)/ Western University, the project aims to: 1) develop cross-national education and research opportunities specific to local and global health equity, and pre- and post-migration trauma and health; and 2) global/local knowledge mobilization pathways to ensure that best practices in addressing health inequities are shared bilaterally.  The Project Lead contact : Prof. Helene Berman, Professor, Arthur Labatt Family School of Nursing; Academic Director, Centre for Research on Health Equity and Social Inclusion (CRHESI).

 

 

  • -/2017 : Sezibera (Co-PI, in collaboration with Boston College). Project name: Sugira Muryango Cluster Randomized Trial. Main goals : Sugira Muryango is a home-visiting intervention that promotes positive parent-child relationships and fosters healthy child development. It is based on the Family Strengthening Intervention (FSI) model originally developed and tested in Rwanda to improve communication and parenting in HIV/AIDS-affected families with school-age children. This model proved effective in strengthening parent-child relations and reducing child maltreatment. Sugira Muryango focuses on the core elements of child development—physical, cognitive, linguistic and socio-emotional—and builds on the World Health Organization (WHO)/United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) Care for Child Development Package, which has been delivered successfully across low-resource settings. Sugira Muryango additionally addresses key psychosocial issues including conflict resolution and violence. prevention, while promoting a future-orientation with a focus on bolstering resilience.. The other Investigator contact : Prof. Theresa Betancourt,  Salem Professor in Global Practice, Director, Rsearch Program on Children and Adversity, Boston College of Social Work.

 

  • -/2018 : Sezibera (Co-PI, in collaboration with the Rwanda Biomedical Centre/Moh and MINIYOUT). Project name :Rwanda Mental Health Survey. Main goals : The general objective of this survey is to determine the prevalence of mental disorders, PTSD, drug abuse including their associated risk and protective factors as well as assessing knowledge and utilization of mental health services. Specific objectives include : (1) To estimate the prevalence and risk factors of mental disorders in the Rwandan population aged 14 to 65 living in Rwanda, (2) To document the prevalence and risk factors of PTSD in the Rwandan population aged 14 to 65 living in Rwanda, (3)To estimate the prevalence of drug abuse and risk factors in the Rwanda population 14 to 65 living in Rwanda, (4) To assess the knowledge and utilization of health services available for people with mental disorders, including PTSD and drug abuse induced disorders.   • -/2018: Sezibera (Co-PI, in collaboration with Global Pediatric Mental Health Foundations). Project name:  A Situational Analysis of Autism Spectrum Disorders in Rwanda.  Main goals: To conduct a situational analysis in Rwanda that will explore the current challenges and opportunities that exist in the country of Rwanda regarding general knowledge of and service provision for children with autism spectrum disorders and their families in order to provide data for use in future policy and service provision planning.
